Simpática!

After 50 years, "Escuela de Música" becomes, from a light comedy with very popular songs in Latin America, in a document and example of what a "familiar movie" was back then in Mexico: some mockery, some situations to make you smile and a happy end. But this is probably the closest example of what a " musical super production" was, following the line of American movies. For Latin American music lovers is interesting due it features songs from different countries: Mexico -of course- (La Cumbancha, Estrellita, Alma Jarocha and Guadalajara, among others; Argentina (A media luz), Venezuela (Alma llanera), Cuba (El manicero) and Brazil (Aquarela do Brasil) sang in Portuguese --something quite rare in those days in Mexico, singing in other language. Lots of folkloric stylized dresses for shows and good orchestrations, some times filmed in b&w and some others in color -don't ask me why. Not an artistic jewel but a document of -more or less- how Mexican people sang, dressed and behave in those years. Simpatica!

Review and summary.

BREAD, LOVE AND JEALOUSY or "FRISKY" as the American distributor re-titled it upon its initial American release, is a sequel to the tremendously successful BREAD, LOVE AND DREAMS made in 1953. They were the first two of a series of earthy comedies which Gina Lollobrigida got tired of making. She was replaced in PANE AMORE E... (SCANDAL IN SORRENTO) by Sophia Loren. At the time of their release, these amusing country comedies were seen by critics as a frivolous departure from the more serious neo-realist films of the period, but audiences loved them precisely because of their light charm and their escapist qualities. Most film historians say that BREAD, LOVE AND JEALOUSY isn't quite up to the quality of its predecessor, but the fact is that they are cut from the same cloth and seem like two parts of the same film, as pleasing and delightful today as when they came out, even better, given the sweet spice of nostalgia. Borrowing elements of Shakespearean comedy, this film is about the parallel amorous fortunes of two couples, one young, one middle-age. We encountered them both in the first film. "Maresciallo" Antonio Carotenuto (Vittorio De Sica) must resign his position in the village in order to marry the town midwife, an unwed mother. Pietro, the young policeman who is to marry "Bersagliera" or "Frisky" (Lollobrigida) is transferred to another town. Frisky is assigned to the maresciallo who takes her into his house as a servant. Gossip about the two grows. The fiancé returns and breaks off the engagement. The father of the midwife's child appears, proposes marriage, and the parish priest induces the woman to accept. The wrongly maligned Frisky makes peace with her fiancé. Another midwife arrives in town. The maresciallo can lust hopefully once more. The movie could be called "All's Well that Ends Well, Italian Style." There isn't much one can say about a movie as simple and unassuming as this, except that the performers bring it off admirably and command our attention for an hour and a half. No social moral, no essay into the alienation of modern man, no peeks at the filmmaker's navel exist here...only the ingratiating talents of Gina Lollobrigida and Vittorio De Sica under the humane direction of Luigi Comencini.

a little cold, but very good

This finely crafted movie takes us convincingly back to the France of some 100 years ago. Against the setting of a small provincial town, it shows how its prominent citizens mix up with the officers of the local cavalry regiment. Citizenry is represented here by the excellent female star Michèle Morgan, the military equally well by actor Gérard Philipe. The magnificent interaction between the two of them makes this movie going: Morgan, playing a divorced Parisienne running a ladies' fashion shop, has herself seduced at last by officer Philipe's tireless efforts. But at that very moment their relationship takes a turn for the worse.

Their tragedy gets more dimension, and is softened at the same time by the succesful development of another love. A young local girl (Brigitte Bardot) finds her cavalry officer, played by Yves Robert. The sincere human warmth between them contrasts with the stiff etiquette in the Morgan/Philipe-affair.

'Les grandes manoeuvres' (= the big army-excercises) is a very well made movie. I only think it a little too mechanical, as director René Clair forces you to watch it with hardly any emotions. Not even Brigitte Bardot is able to change that.

Review :

Quite simply a classic

Gripping, powerful drama of corrupt unions for dock workers and how one man Terry Malloy (Marlon Brando) fights back.

This movie is a definite must-see. The story is pretty simple and has been done before but the script is superb and all the actors are at the height of their powers. Brando is unbelievable as Malloy--he portrays his innocence and hurt so easily--I actually started to get a lump in my throat when he comes to grips about the corruption. Rod Steiger is great in a small role as his brother. The taxicab sequence between him and Brando has become a legend--rightfully. Lee J. Cobb is frightening as the leader of it all. Eva Marie Saint (in her first theatrical role) is gorgeous and just great as a woman who falls in love with Brando. The scenes between them are incredible. There's also superb direction by Elia Kazan--this is possibly his best work. The only debit here is Karl Malden as the priest--he overplays it way too much and got on more nerves. But that's about it.

This movie is one of those rare instances where everything clicked together perfectly. A HUGE hit in its day. Don't miss this one!

Bad Moon Men

Johnny Weissmuller plays a character named Johnny Weissmuller who must take a female writer (Jean Byron) through the jungles where she's going to do a story about a tribe known as "Moon Men". These people aren't from the moon sadly but instead they worship a princess who just happens to be some sort of relation to an Egyptian Moon goddess. This next-to-last entry in the "Jungle Jim" series dropped that name for some reason and had Weissmuller playing a character with his own name but there's no question what series this film belongs to. I've read very few positive reviews to any of the Jungle Jim movies and many that I have read called this one of the worst. If this is just one of the worst and not the worst then I certainly hate myself for being a completest because I will still search out the other films in the series that I haven't seen even if that means having to torture myself with more madness. It's strange but on a technical level this is perhaps the best of the series that I've seen but this is the major problem. It seems like more money was pumped into this film and it's clear to see that the amount of stock footage has been reduced dramatically. The earlier films in the series at least had a camp value to them because of the amount of stock footage and how poorly it mixed in with everything else going on. With that missing here the camp value is pretty much missing and all we're left with is the bad acting and bad story that all of the films have. I must admit that I was constantly losing my attention span because nothing going on stuck me as the least bit interesting. The entire adventure was a joke because not for a second did I believe anything I was seeing. The so-called drama wasn't there because the entire set-up was just tired and silly. The comic relief was just downright poor and that chimp just gets more and more annoying with each new film. Weissmuller certainly wasn't an actor and his struggles to get lines out are quite apparent here. The supporting cast isn't much better but it's very possible they all realized they were in a Jungle Jim movie and decided to just take it easy. There's very little going on in this picture to make it worth viewing. At 70-minutes it's way too long and there just aren't enough fun moments to make it worth viewing. Certainly only recommended to those who must see each film in the series.

After members of his family are killed by the Maraday Gang during a stagecoach robbery, Larry Delong takes a job as stage guard in hopes that he will meet up with the outlaws. They don't believe his story and, in fact, accuse him of complicity in the stage robbery, tasking the town's remaining deputy with arresting him. Randy Remounts Once More...

Larry DeLong (Randolph Scott) is a man on a mission to bring to justice Dan Marady (James Millican) and his band of outlaws (who include a young Charles Bronson – then Buchinsky – amongst their number). So determined is he that he's riding shotgun on the stagecoach hoping Marady will strike. Marady's just as obsessed with his pursuer and, with an ease that makes you wonder whether ol' Randy isn't starting to slip, tricks our hero into a trap. Left to die by Marady's men, DeLong manages to escape (managing somehow not to shoot himself in the back of the head while doing so) and returns to warn the local townsfolk only to find that they suspect him of being one of the gang, and of trying to throw them off the trail of his mates.

As with most of Scott's films, Riding Shotgun is a reasonably entertaining Western shot on a modest budget, although enhanced perhaps by Andre De Toth's direction. The story's a little silly at times, with villains who take the time to explain to their victim exactly what it is they plan to do after he is dead so that, when he defies death – as Randy invariably did back then – he knows exactly what he has to do to foil their plot. The difference with this one is that he's largely impotent against the suspicion and mistrust of the well-meaning townsfolk, and spends much of the time unsuccessfully attempting to convince them that the bad guys are coming back into town to knock off the casino now that all the town's able-bodied men have formed a posse to chase a phantom gang of stagecoach robbers.

The film is reminiscent of High Noon in a way, although on an obviously much smaller scale, in that it pits a single man against an entire town. But in this case, the single man is a victim of mistrust and rumour, and his every move, no matter how innocent or well-meaning, is repeatedly misconstrued as something altogether more sinister. A better writer would have injected a lot more tension into the plot, but Randy was almost always whiter-than-white in his movies so there's not a lot of room to explore personality flaws that simply don't exist, and there's never any danger that DeLong just might lose his patience.

Decent enough then, but not one of Scott's best.

Richard Conte works hard to protect a Russian defector and get him back to America

For me, Conte makes the movie. The more I see his work, the better it seems to me to be. He's not a razzle dazzle actor. He doesn't over-emote or even seem to emote that much. But if you watch his eyes, you will see his acting and emotion. He's always good in film noir, like Mr. Brown in The Big Combo and the escaped criminal, Marty Rome, in Cry of the City (and MANY others). Later generations know him as Barzini in The Godfather. And so here he brightens up a British cast, and so does his love interest Rona Anderson.

Nuclear scientists are being killed in England to prevent the West from nuclear progress. A Russian defector arrives and must be transported to America by Conte. But before that can happen, he and a British policeman must deflect and locate the nest of killers, who are quite clever in their work. Along the way there are sparks between Conte and Anderson.

At 70 minutes, it doesn't overstay its welcome. Good little crime-spy story done up nicely as these 50s movies were usually done. This is before James Bond and before the more highly-budgeted and elaborate spy movies like The Man Who Came in From the Cold or The Ipcress File or The Deadly Affair. This movie is a modest affair and enjoyable.

Whatever became of Kelly Ryan ?

I was 11 when I saw this B-western and I do not remember anything about it except that I fell deeply and as passionately as an 11 year old can for the eponymous heroine as played by Kelly Ryan.Miss Ryans place in the chronology of such things was that she replaced Francoise Arnoul ("French Can Can")in my affections and shortly after was replaced by Debbie Reynolds. I never heard of Miss Ryan again. But it says much about the impression she made on me that 50 years later her name came readily to mind.

Pel, a natural promoter, persuades a real estate broker to donate land for the show, which will feature Sapolio inside a glass cage housed in a tent to be ogled by the curious paying public. Prior to the start of the ordeal, Sapolio and his wife throw a party in their flat. Pel Pelham Opening Soon With Starving Man Act.

The Glass Tomb (AKA: The Glass Cage) is directed by Montgomery Tully and adapted to screenplay by Richard Landau from the story The Outsiders written by A. E. Martin. It stars John Ireland, Honor Blackman, Geoffrey Keen, Eric Pohlmann, Sid James and Sydney Tafler. Music is by Leonard Salzedo and cinematography by Walter Harvey.

Pel Pelham's carnival is in town and the star attraction is Sapolio, a man prepared to be locked in a glass cage and starve himself for 70 days. But when a couple of murders occur at the carnival, the police become involved and suspicion starts to point its ugly finger.

Part of the Hammer Film Noir series released by VCI Entertainment, The Glass Tomb is an odd little picture that's more a collection of noirish traits and ideas than a fully fledged movie. Running at just under an hour in length, film hinges on the flimsiest of stories but just about gets away with it on account of solid performances and some spiky themes in the piece. In the mix are carnival outcasts, blackmail, murder, carnal desires, gluttony, addiction and a macabre party scene with a body upstairs kept company for some time by the murderer?! These are nicely presided over by Tully and Harvey where shadows are often prominent and a neon light and subway train serve the atmosphere very well. You do wonder what world we live in when people pay to watch a man just not eat? While the murderer is known to us from the first killing, thus there's no mystery aspect to hang your coat on. Though clearly the makers want us to observe how the murderer easily moves about this carnival group undetected and above suspicion.

Not comfortably recommended as a whole, but enough parts of the quilt for the noir fans to appreciate. 6/10

Sleazy Import

An American engineer helps a German girl escape the clutches of a white slavery ring in South America.

The movie's a peculiar production. The origin appears West German since the names in the credit crawl are German, while the cast, except for Brady, is also German. I guess the film was released here by Lindsley Parsons' low-budget outfit. All in all, the package seems odd since not many English-language films came from West Germany during this post-war period.

Anyway, the result plays like an exploitation movie with its tawdry subject-matter (notice all the euphemisms used for the taboo word "prostitute"), plus a suggestive title that, as I recall, was heavily promoted at the time. The opening part in the city plays pretty well, but once the action moves inland, the screenplay becomes darn near incoherent with its shifting locales minus connecting segues.

Still, Matz is a spunky little number, reminding me of Debbie Reynolds with an accent, while Brady delivers a surprisingly spirited performance as the white knight. Burr turns up in a sinister role so typical of his pre-Perry Mason period; at the same time, his jumbo tropical suit suggests a younger version of the great Sydney Greenstreet.

The movie has a few good moments and some suspense, but on the whole fails to rise above the level of exotic sleaze.

Following an absence of eight years, Jet Cosgrave (John Derek) returns to his hometown of Colton, Colorado. His quest is for the recovery of his rightful heritage, the great Circle C Ranch, from his uncle, Major Cosgrave (Jim Davis), and to that end, he brings with him nine hired gunmen, headed by "Dude" Rankin (Bob Steele). His accusation that his uncle stole the ranch by a will forged after the death of his father brings instant reprisals. That was for Asa

Tremendously good B western which today would be an A western. Strong acting, tremendous direction and the kind of realism in fights you never see. I think the smack on the head by the horse was intentional and left in as Jet's way of showing Dude who was boss without using his gun. It may have been accidental but if so was left in because it worked.

Real scenery and some really cool off the backdrop shots which really worked in color.

My only problem? Where in the 1880's West does a guy come up with a name like "Jet?" I thought it was Jeb, or Jed until I saw the credits.

Recommend to any western lover and others too. Loved Bob Steele as a bad guy. He never worked for me as a good guy. I think it's certainly one of Derek's best and seeing a Young Slim Pickens on a horse at a gallop. Now that is cool.

Rhonda and Mamie in harem outfits!

Watching so many of these 50s adventure movies, be they vehicles for cowboys or detectives, soldiers or swashbucklers, aliens or monsters, were like reading so much of the pulp fiction of the day. Rather than spending days reading a book, you could spend a couple of hours whisked away to a fantasy land with some harmless adventure and thrills if not a lot of thought provoking ideas. Forty some years later after growing older and wiser, there are still those times when I wonder where Hollywood's current head is, and head back to comfortable familiar territory. I started watching these kind of movies about the time I reached puberty and needless to say, watching this movie with raging hormones was a thrilling experience back then. Rhonda Fleming is still my favorite actress all these years later, and Mamie Van Doren was one of my favorite 50s blond bombshells, so how can I say anything bad about a Technicolor movie that puts both of these women in harem outfits? Yeow! I always thought Rhonda was at her peak in The Gunfight at the OK Corral, but to this day one of my treasured possessions is an autographed publicity still of her in her harem outfit. Move over Jeannie, you've got company! Forget the hokum plot and go for the ride and check out two of the greatest harem beauties ever.

A "Lost in Translation" for 50's Japan

Mr. Mito (Shuji Sano), a Tokyo businessman, is demoted and sent to Osaka. There, he finds lodging in the titular inn, and makes the acquaintance of many of the town's citizens. Notable among them are the maids at the inn, a hard-drinking geisha, and a mysterious woman Mito encounters at the mailbox. In Japan, director Gosho's name is synonymous with melancholy and finding laughter through tears; An Inn at Osaka bears up that reputation. The struggle to stay afloat in life, especially financially, is a running theme of the film, as all of the characters struggle with looming poverty and gnawing loneliness, but it all ends with a kind of quiet triumph.

Musical vehicle for the long lived Lola Flores

Quite ambitiously staged vehicle for Signora Flores, who has a strong singing voice and gets by doing her castanets number. Her career ran half a century. Picture a singing Anna Magnani Her numbers space the plot that has her leaving the gypsy camp for the big city, where her talent gets to be show cased in a (cut to colour) TV studio ballet to Ravel's Bolero.

The production is quite substantial in the terms of the contemporary Mexican film. Competent all studio filming in the hands of Cardona, whose exploitation films had wide circulation dubbed, while the works of Miss Flores appear to be known only in the Hispanic world.
