Like the Saracen Blade, Castle always just bounces back

Like other films in this era of Katzman-Castle production, The Saracen Blade puts an emphasis on tableau (symmetrical composition of mise-en-scene within the framing of a static camera positioned with frontality as the dominant). Castle outdoes himself this time as he adds a new element to his beleaguered stylistic system - suture! The shot-reverse-shot editing system is not only naively constructed and overt, but poorly employed with relation to the plot progression. As a result, there is a stagnant pace. I pity that a talented director such as William Castle found himself compulsively alternating between two stylistic systems for different films. The Saracen Blade is a 1954 release - and one of eight Castle films released that year! If the authorial voice seems mute perhaps it was a result of the man being overworked. The script doesn't help as the narrative is relayed with tweenish 'dear-diary' precision and crossing-guard intuition. If only this film wore a bright reflective 'X' it might become self-aware and develop a set of compensatory unique qualities. As it stands, the film hunches and then limps. Despite each sequence taken individually having the flavor of a bad porno, there is no passion infused into character relationships. All the characters seem sickeningly smug about the conflicts that befall them. But fear not, for Castle would soon break free from a bunk system of mechanical and mass reproduction in the guise of historical action-drama storytelling in order to forge the better parts of a stylistic system that he had been struggling to express for most of his career (When Stranger Marry had established most of the elements).

Good survival melodrama

This tale was previously filmed in 1939 ,by the same director ,John Farrow and in that version it was a lean, mean and exciting B-movie.Here it lasts 20 minutes or so longer and this additional running time consists mainly of padding ,which serves to dilute the impact of the movie. It means that the minor classic of an earlier era has become a solid and enjoyable movie from the era in which it was made . The story revolves around a plane crash in the remote jungles of South America. The pilot declares he is able to repair the plane and it will fly some of them back to safety ,the problem being there is only room for 5 people on board the repaired vessel ,which means some will have to stay behind and take their chances with the inhospitable terrain and the hostile natives who are unhappy about this incursion into their domain . The survivors are a disparate group-there is the hard drinking pilot (Robert Ryan) ,a Vegas performer (Anita Ekberg),a criminal en route to execution (Rod Steiger) and the sadistic cop accompanying him (Fred Clark),a socialite and her milquetoast fiancé (Phyllis Kirk and Gene Barry),the co-pilot (Keith Andes),a distinguished elderly academic and his wife of many years (Cameron Proudhomme and Beulah Bondi). The party is rounded out by a 4 year old boy(Jon Provost) The movie sees the party disintegrate under the strain as tensions erupt and violence breaks out before the final decision is a made

The movie is well acted -,especially by Steiger ,Barry and Ryan ,has a crisp Franz Waxman score and delivers solid entertainment all round .It would ,in my view have benefited from being a tad leaner and more economical but there is still a good time to be had from watching it

Review :

A charming and entertaining film about children

I saw this movie when it first came out in the l950's. It's the story of a little boy and girl called John and Julie who want very desperately to attend the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth IInd. When it becomes apparent that their parents can't take them they run away together to London and the film is the story of their little adventure and the things that happened to them. There is a chance they may not see the Queen.... It is funny and the children are very appealing.

The background music for the film is very melodic. This music was recorded by trumpet player Eddie Calvert. The little girl, Julie was played by Lesley Dunlop, who acted in the early l990's in a British TV serial called "May to December", playing the part of Zoe Callender.

Review :

Worthy of Special Mention

"We shall not see each other again I think, farewell...". Those last words spoken on screen in 1958 by the grand Robert Donat in "Inn of the 6th Happiness", were to also prove true in life. This sterling Oscar winning performer was truly a one of a kind screen personality. Judy Garland claimed him as her favorite actor, and he cited the great Paul Muni as one of his favorites. How sad then that this remarkable performer suffered from an almost incomprehensible lack of confidence, combined with acute asthma, that eventually weakened him, contributing to his death.

Most every major studio, and director, strove to convince him to take the lead roles in numerous productions - most he would decline. Many American film makers went to the UK (the land he called home) just to have him take the lead in their movies (who can forget him as "The Count of Monte Cristo" from 1934!). Seems such a pity he chose to live in a British climate, had he lived elsewhere he may have enjoyed better health. Without the medications we now take for granted, his life was reduced to fear and suffering.

"Lease of Life" marked his return to the screen following several years of ill health. It was a role tailor made for him, as the unassuming pastor in a Yorkshire village. His stylish, strong flow of delivery belied the difficulty this must have presented him. Award nominated writer Eric Ambler: (The Cruel Sea '53 ~ Night to Remember '58 ~ Mask of Dimitrios '44) created a story that was both quiet, and forceful at the same time - perfect for this extraordinary actor. His wife played by Kay Walsh (Stage Fright '50) is admirable in her role of a woman longing for more of life's finery. Scottish born beauty (of Italian parents) Adrienne Corri (Dr Zhivago '65 ~ The River '51 ~ Scrooge '70) gives strong support as their youthful daughter.

Award winning director of photography: Douglas Slocombe (Indiana Jones: several entries in that series ~ Jesus Christ Super star '73 ~ The Great Gatsby '74) provides former editor turned director, Charles Frend (Scott of the Antarctic '48 ~ The Cruel Sea '53) with glorious Technicolor images. Symphonic composer Alan Rawsthorne (Pandora and the Flying Dutchman '51) provides the suitably staunch score. The film is edited by Peter Tanner who also gave flowing style to the highly interesting 'Pool of London' in 1951. Award winning art director Jim Moraham (Train of Events '50 ~ The Blue Lamp '50) adds fine touches of aesthetic detail. A team of quality film makers give much to this somewhat under appreciated, and rarely seen feature. May be a little quiet (slow) for some, but those looking for quality, should be well rewarded for their patience.

Again, I caught this classic on local Australian TV channel Gem, who treated it with the same level of contempt they show to those who have chosen to tune in...reducing it to nothing more than a devise to force their inane promotions down viewer's throats, filling it with annoying 'pop-ups' and intrusive over sized station graphics. I'll be looking for a DVD so I won't need to suffer this channel's childish lack of presentation style again. Will they ever learn?!

Golden vein

I didn't recognize Terence Hill (here credited as Mario Girotti ,his real name, like in "Cartagine in Flamme ";it was to last till 1967);I must say his movies with Bud Spencer and co are not my cup of tea anyway. When he made "La Vena D'Ora " he was sixteen ,and it is much to Bolognini's credit ,for teenagers are generally played by actors in their twenties (see "Rebel without a cause" ).

Long before Louis Malle and his "Soufflé Au Coeur" ,with more elegance,Bolognini depicts an oedipal relationship between a mother and her only son.Not only he is still in love with her ,but she is too,and she looks so young (she is a widow) they seem like a pair of lovers.

When the movie begins ,both seem to live in a luxury mausoleum ,where only women are to be found:an old servant,an aging aristocrat who believes she's still attractive ,a rather bland young girl ...there's about as much life as in the archaeological site of professor Baseheart.

The boy invites the professor for dinner and the forty-something soon becomes a rival, more than he can endures. The center of the movie is a ball during which the boy's resentment against him knows no more bounds.

Bolognini's movies are always a delight to watch ,even if the ending of this one is a bit disappointing:the pictures in black and white are magnificent.

Bolognini was certainly ,along with Comencini, the most underrated of Italian directors.

Like this? try these....

Not a Great Film

Never viewed this Richard Widmark film and was very disappointed at the entire picture. In this picture Widmark plays the role as an Air Force Sgt Joe Lawrence who is stationed in Berlin and is eager to retire but he always manages to get himself into trouble. Joe leaves his jeep on a street and it gets stolen by a homeless young German boy who runs the jeep into a ditch and destroys the axle. Joe follows the boy to where he lives and meets up with a pretty blonde named Maria, (Mai Zetterling) and they both fall in love with each other. Joe becomes interested in making a quick buck by stealing some old Nazi precious goods and the story takes another twist and becomes very detailed and confusing.

It really blows me away...

I first saw Rear Window about 4 years ago in a video/film program that I was attending. At that time I was simply blown away by it.

For starters, I was simply impressed w/ the set. The fact that you can see out of Jeffries' apartment window, across the courtyard and into the other tenant's apartments to see their goings on is incredible. The music used is a musician tenant creating a piece. The fact that it ebbs and flows w/ the action, until the very end when you actualy hear the finished piece committed to vinyl is really cool.

I liked the fact that you only see what Jeffries sees and therefore have to try and guess what actually happened.

While the movie, in a way is actualy about nothing, yet it is about voyeurism and to a lesser degree about love between two apparently different people. However, that is a side line to the actual plot.

for Hitchock, this film uses suspense, rather than gross thriller, such as Psycho or the Birds did to draw you into the film. I've seen it many times and always get something out of it every time. I own a non restored copy on tape and watch it at least twice a year-or more.

It's simply one of the best movies ever made that I've seen and one of my all time favorites. A near perfect movie if I say so myself.

Hitchcock realy paid attention to detail in this movie. The fact that you see "miss Lonely Hearts" actions, Even Lars Thorwald's action is incredible. The attention to detail is simply incredible.

Review :

Abdulla Is Not So Great, But Kay Kendall Is!

Kay Kendall become a popular cult idol throughout the 1960s. After her tragic death from leukemia in 1959, movie lovers were dosed with constant repeats of Genevieve, Fast and Loose, Doctor in the House, The Constant Husband, Simon and Laura, Quentin Durward, Les Girls, The Reluctant Debutante and Once More With Feeling. In fact, every film she ever made from Genevieve (1953 onwards was constantly revived not only on television but even theatrically. With two odd exceptions! Meet Mr Lucifer (1953) was never shown. Nor was Abdulla the Great. Television executives had good reason to blackball Meet Mr Lucifer, a merciless satire on the whole TV industry, but Abdulla the Great? One of Kay's best roles, in which she is gorgeously photographed by Lee Garmes and most stylishly costumed? Even the usually hard-to-please Monthly Film Bulletin singled out her performance, describing it as "most persuasive".

Abdulla, of course, is meant to be taken as a blatant impersonation of King Farouk. But whether you get the satirical intent or not, doesn't really matter. Ratoff invigorates the role with his usual gusty pizazz. In his playing, in fact, he comes across as far more powerful a figure than is represented by his timid, rather routine direction, though perhaps he gave a few good acting tips to Kay Kendall who is absolutely outstanding here. These are easily her finest moments in the cinema, easily creaming her horn solo in Genevieve or her constant combats with a tempestuous Yul Brynner in Once More With Feeling or her decorative alliance with real-life husband Rex Harrison in The Reluctant Debutante.

The other main players are somewhat less than adequate, particularly Kay's love interest, Captain Farid (woodenly enacted by Sydney Chaplin). If memory serves me correctly, Alex D'Arcy as Abdulla's chief adviser is also disappointingly lackluster in a role that would seem made-to-order.

Abdulla was quite lavishly produced, obviously on authentic Egyptian locations, and superbly photographed by ace cinematographer Lee Garmes (who deserved an Academy Award for his work on Gone With The Wind—he photographed almost the entire first hour—but didn't get one).

Enjoyable Thriller

Found this little gem when browsing for this type of film (British B films) on Amazon.

Nigel Patrick plays a very decent sort, he's a racehorse trainer who happened to train the grand National winner. Moira Lister who looks absolutely gorgeous plays his unfaithful drunken wife.

The plot revolves around what happened after the horse wins the big race, when the wife provokes her husband, character name Gerald Coates so much he does her in. Foolishly as per normal he tries to get away with it instead of coming clean and claiming self defence of course this backfires and a murder investigation begins lead by a tenacious detective from the yard played by the excellent Michael Hordern.

All in a all a very enjoyable thriller with a fine ending

Vienna has built a saloon outside of town, and she hopes to build her own town once the railroad is put through, but the townsfolk want her gone. When four men hold up a stagecoach and kill a man the town officials, led by Emma Small, come to the saloon to grab four of Vienna's friends, the Dancin' Kid and his men. Review :

An enjoyable film - but a very unusual western

Just outside of town is a small saloon where the owner, Vienna, plans to develop a new town once the railroad comes through. However her associations with criminals (namely the Dancin' Kid and his gang) bring the disapproving Emma Small and the authorities to the saloon. Aided by the arrival of a man from her past, Vienna stands against them, but only succeeds in putting off the inevitable confrontation in a situation made worse by love and deception.

I came to this film simply because it was the username of another person on the imdb boards and I was intrigued as to what it was about. The film starts as a western but it simply doesn't conform to that genre, instead it is a weirdly matriarchal piece where the traditional roles are almost roundly reversed and the whole film has an otherworldly feel to it. The plot summary doesn't really do justice to a story that essentially comes down to being a battle between Emma and Vienna as well as throwing up all manner of issues regarding the relationships between the characters. The western clichés become secondary to these relationships and the director seems to prefer these to any lynching or shoot out.

The full colour of the film gives it a gaudy, otherworldly appeal that is very enjoyable. Fires range in terrible, hellish reds, while shadows divide scenes of emotional complexity. Heck, it even goes down to the basic level of having the innocent Vienna dressed in perfect white before doing a blood red shirt to become a fugitive. Not all of this works of course, and several times I wished it would settle down into a film that I could recognise rather than being so different from what I am used to, but it was more interesting as a result (aside from being less accessible).

The cast are roundly good but the fireworks belong to the two lead actresses. Despite being the title character, Hayden is rather underplayed but I think that was the point - he is not the typical Western man's man. Crawford is very good as Vienna but she is out-hammed and out-vamped by McCambridge who is excellent. In any other film her performance would be woefully OTT but against the background of a saloon burning with a hellish fire, her facial expression work very well and her whole performance fits well too.

Overall this film is no classic western - mainly because it is not a western but rather a complex story in western clothes. The gaudy colours and cleverly framed shots only serve to enhance a plot that is difficult to fully appreciate but is engaging none the less.

Review :

1950's Cold War Paranoia

The movie starts out with a real cool jazzy score like something you would expect from a movie like "The Gene Krupa Story. The opening scene has Kotty, Terry Moore, lying on the beach getting sun and surf until Slob, Lee Marvin, who notices her from a distance starts getting fresh with her and ends up getting a couple of seashells thrown at him.

You don't really know what the movie is about until the professor, Frank Lovejoy, comes on the scene and from him talking to Knotty you realize that he's working at a top secret government facility just up the road from the diner where Knotty and Slob work.

The movie goes along it's somewhat comical pace with Slob acting like Ed Norton in "the Honeymooners" messing up everything that he does as a cook at the diner until we see the person delivering fish and Slob start whispering with him out of earshot of the diners owner George, Keenan Wynn, and then the fisherman slips Slob something . Later Slob all by himself in his room begins to take on a new look, not kooky and funny but dead serious, as we see him take what the fisherman gave him and put it into a viewfinder. Slob sees some kind of mathematical formula and it's then when you realize that this is a story about espionage.

Not really as corny and obnoxious as most movies about the Communist threat against America was back then in the 1950's with Lee Marvin stealing every scene that he's in as the greasy cook turned top Soviet spy and being very convincing at it.

Frank Lovejoy in a role very similar to his previous Communist fighting movie "I was a Communist for the FBI" is also very convincing as a man torn between the truth and a lie by trying to infiltrate the Communist spy ring led by Slob. Where at the same time not being able to tell his girlfriend, Knotty, who thinks that he's a spy for the Soviets, without blowing his cover. Terry Moore was very good as a naive girl who learned a lot during the movie about who to trust and who not to. Like in the espionage business all that you see is not what you think.

All and all a much better movie about espionage during the cold war then most movies about the subject were back them with a great performance by Lee Marvin, one of his best. "Shack out at 101" sadly showed that in those troubled times the paranoia that griped the USA was so extreme that you couldn't trust anyone when it came to being a Communist spy. Even the cook serving you coffee and apple pie at your neighborhood diner.

great film! how can it be so ignored?

Th Gunfighter and High Noon were landmarks for the western genre. They determined the style of many films to come, but none of those turned out to be as good as "The Brass Legend". Gerd Oswald besides this film also directed "A Kiss Before Dying" and "Fury at Showdown", the two of them remarkable. I saw this film yesterday and was amazed at how actual it seemed, also full of the unexpected in a genre where there is a lot of routine. There is Donald McDonald as Clay Gipson, the little boy that makes you realize how far from Shane this movie is. Millie Street (Rebecca Welles) is outstanding , the prostitute with no gold in her heart. Raymond Burr as Tris Hatten gets you scared just by looking at the camera, you know you can expect the worst from him. Hugh O'Brian all in black is the perfect Sheriff. Great showdown halfway through the picture. After you see this movie, which caught your attention full time with no break you wonder how come it is so ignored. Two words only: Great film!!

Nice, Old-Fashioned Fillm But Too Long

I really liked the first part of this movie, with all the famous songs and great color that looks even better on DVD....and just a great feel of old-fashioned wholesomeness.

The rest of the film doesn't live up to that first part as the songs aren't as good and the thin storyline is stretched out too long. They didn't need to make this 145 minutes. Two hours would have been plenty.

The story is just about two romances: the main "contest:" Gordon McCrae and Rod Steiger both vying for Shirley Jones, and the minor one with Gloria Grahame and two suitors. Grahame, with her humor as "Ado Annie Carnes" is the best character in the film, at least to me. Eddie Albert also chips in with some humor as the "peddler" and Charlotte Greenwood was good as "Aunt Eller."

Jones and McCrae are about as "All-American" as you can get and Steiger is the lone "villain" of the film. The most colorful segment of the movie was the dream scene that featured a great set. The dancing didn't do much for me, but the bright colors sure did.

Overall, a refreshing nice old-fashioned musical and a visual treat as well. If it's a little long, well, so be it.

Bad encounters of the last kind

Alexandre Astruc himself once told how this movie had badly dated.Seen today,it is terribly boring.Handicapped by constant voice over provided by the leading actress in a funeral voice and by the "narrator" who ridiculously sermonizes about today's -that is to say in the fifties - youth, this story seems too intellectual ,too superficial ,to move us deeply .Even a burning subject (abortion) was not that new since Henri-Georges Clouzot had already broached it in his classic "Le Corbeau" a decade earlier. The entire story is told with flashbacks ,the heroine sitting in a police station .Alexandre Astruc would do much better with his fine adaptation of Guy De Maupassant's "Une Vie" (1958).In that movie, the voice over is never irritating ,for Claude Renoir's dazzling cinematography easily makes up for it.

Marie-Antoinette and Axel Fersen....

When I watched the movie again the other day,it was followed by a debate where two historians and a writer Simone Bertière said that ,in spite of some inaccuracies, they did like the movie.Mrs Bertière wrote an absorbing biography of the unfortunate queen :although it's very long (800+ pages in paperback),I recommend it to all people interested in my country's last (and most famous) real queen (the two queens of the 1815-1848 Restoration do not count)I wish it could be translated into English .

Jean Delannoy, the bete noire of the Nouvelle Vague ,did an OK job.The historians noticed how the scenes of the trial resembled old engravings.Michele Morgan is well cast as the aging queen ,but in the first scenes she's inevitably too old -in her thirties when the queen was 15!-The same goes for Jacques Morel's Louis XVI:not only he was too short for a king who was 1.90 meters high -,but he is too caricatured.

Best scenes : the first ones, including the saucy sequence where Louis the Fifteenth tells his grandson what he 'll have to do...in bed in thinly veiled terms; His death and the noise of a hundred feet walking to the room where the new sovereigns are waiting;the trial and the guillotine scene ; the presence of a non-juring priest(a Michel Piccoli cameo) under the scaffold and the altar with blood stains are good ideas even if it's dubious from a historical point of view.

But objections to Delannoy's film remain. It should have been called "Marie-Antoinette and Fersen" cause the handsome Swede (played by earnest thespian Richard Todd ) plays a too prominent part. He's present when the populace screams in Versailles "The queen on the balcony!" "Not the children" ;he helps them settle in the Louvre. All this is pure invention, probably coming from the romantic mind of the scenarists And during the long day of Varennes ,when he leaves the king and the queen en route to Brussels (historically inaccurate),he and Marie -Antoinette act as if the King is no longer here.On the other hand ,it's true that Fersen was the brains behind the mad escape.

Too many important events are omitted :the storming of the Tuileries is absent, which is a problem since it was the fall of the monarchy and the birth of the first republic.

A good thing:the dialog is full of historical sentences ,not only during the trial, but during the whole movie. That said, the movie about this queen is yet to make:Maybe Sofia Coppola..Maybe...there's always hope, they say...

Help me find the movie or the novel

I'm also a captive-fan of this movie. I watched it when I was 12 and I really didn't understand at all, but while I was growing I remember and learned many things about this movie and I kept yearning to watch again the movie or read Peter Mendelsohn's novel. As others commentaries I remember it as a dream or as a fantasy that perhaps never watched. There is a comment in the movie that I'll remember forever, the old man who Vincent suspect has Marianne imprisons tell him "nowadays there are no ogres keeping Princess, there are only old men with cloudy eyes by the tears" or something like that. Can someone help me find one or another, novel or movie? In the case of the movie I'll prefer the french version with English or Spanish subtitles or the English version and in the case of novel I'll like French, English or if exist Spanish version. Thank you.
