His attitude changes when he runs into his own daughter, whom he rarely sees, and realizes she's now a young woman and in need of his help to continue her studies. His usual partners are away, so he goes in with others to run a swindle, and they aren't forgiving when he claims he's given the money back to their mark. They leave him beaten, robbed, and alone.

Fellini in a narration of the cruelty

The story takes place in Rome and surrounding area in 1953. Augusto (Broderick Crawford), Roberto (Franco Fabrizi), Carlo "Picaso" ((Richard Basehart) and the Baron Vargas (Giacomo Gabrielli) form a band of robbers. Augusto is the protagonist of its execution, he has 48 years and he feels trapped by the age and loneliness. Roberto want to emulate Johnny Ray and looking for fun and enjoy life. Carlo is married to Iris (Giulietta Masina), is a painter frustrated and steals to sustain the family. What the principle of the film begins as a comedy soon becomes drama to observe the plight of the victims of the scams, the expressions that show. As the film, we believe that all of this is doing reflect the characters, but not the case that, there seems to be awareness in the characters. The scene in which Augusto is identified by one of their victims in the cinema before his daughter and the conversation that maintains with a girl with poliomyelitis, are insurmountable. The great music of Nino Rota, and the good photography in black and white prepare a film with more crudely morality. of Federico Fellini

The syndicate responds with escalating violence: is no one safe? Credits preceded by a "newscast" containing spoilers.

Definitely Over-Sensalized

Although this is a great movie, and accurately portrays much of what happened in Phenix City, Hollywood had to make it more dramatic than how Phenix City really was. For example, my grandparents were dating during the "Sin City" era, and walked past Ma Beachie's (and the other casinos/brothels in downtown)to get to the theater in downtown Columbus. They were never harassed, never even had a rude word spoken to them. So it wasn't as if the owners of the places sucked young adults in just to corrupt them.

The violence? Most of that was very real. My family has lived in Phenix City for many generations, and I work in the Chamber of Commerce. Phenix City is truly being redeveloped and is a wonderful, hospitable place to live. There are "rougher" sections of town, but what town doesn't have those? Just take that into consideration when you watch the movie. Phenix City has come a long way since the 1950's.And yes, it's spelled PHENIX City. There is NO O!!!! We get that a lot; I promise, it's not misspelled! :)

Review :

It ends well.

"Radio Cab Murder" begins with an armed robbery. A cab driver, Fred Martin, sees the getaway and gives chase and almost catches up to them...almost. The police were thankful Martin tried and are impressed because Martin is an ex-con--and he's really turned his life around since his release. And, among his co-workers, he's very popular. However, someone is trying to get Martin fired--and sent an anonymous letter to his employer--telling him that Martin in an ex-con. However, the boss likes Martin also and already knows he's an ex-con. No problem, right? Well the police soon realize that the letter might not have come from some crank but a local gang. That's because their safe-cracker was found dead (of natural causes, apparently)--and Martin used to break open safes. It seems that they are TRYING to get him fired so that he'll need work--and they'll offer him some quick money doing SOMETHING illegal. But what is it? Well, the only way to find out is if Martin is willing to work for the police--which he does. But this gang is very deadly and very cautious and it sure looks as if Fred is in for trouble.

This is a very low budget British film. I didn't recognize anyone in the film. Yet, despite this, the film was reasonably exciting and well done. In particular, it ended very well when Martin's friends back at the cab company learn he's in danger and come pouring out of the woodwork to find him! While not a great film by any stretch, it is entertaining and worth a look.

If you are interested in seeing it, it's available from Alpha Video. The print is surprisingly good considering the source.

no passing grade from me

Leave it to romance to further bring down a cowboy movie. I'm a sucker, though, for color western landscape cinematography, so, for me, THAT was a positive about this film. I also thought that the location might be in the southeastern US. But the Seminoles herein are conducting their raids in Texas, as a result of which, Lt. Elliot's force has been summoned by Col. Hannah to enhance his own Cpt. Dudley's men. Additionally complicating is the fact that Col. Hannah's daughter, Susan - once the apple of Lt. Elliot's eye - is now engaged to Cpt. Dudley, who is deeply in debt, which leads to two of his hostages being given to a creditor, who's wife and son died while captives of the Indians. That creditor then kills those hostages, who are the wife and son of the chief, which, in turn, causes Susan to get kidnapped, needing rescuing by the two officers. Oh yeah - other elements to the drama are that Lt. Elliot MAY be the brother of his foe; and, water will be scarce when the soldiers return from where Susan is. This profuse plot and mostly adequate acting notwithstanding, I, nevertheless, withheld a passing grade.

" I owe loyalty to my ship, it's crew and my conscience "

There are several aspect to the selection of a favorite movie star. One would like to view with interest the full potential of said actor when playing different roles in films. However, the true test of any given actor is when the actor can effectively play heroes as well as playing the heavy convincingly. It is difficult to see one of the most prominent leading actors in Hollywood, the Duke, Mr. All American in obvious bad guy roles. For the most part he always played the hero. Thus it is with amusement to see Wayne in this film, " The Sea Chase " playing Capt. Karl Ehrlich a German Officer during World War Two. Further, his ship's crew is loaded with additional actors who have a history of playing good guys siding with him. If you look closely you'll see Jeffrey Hunter, Tab Hunter, James Arness, John Qualen, Paul Fix, Alan Hale Jr., John Doucette and even Claude Akins. The story is of a German cargo vessel, which is believed interned by the British, abruptly escapes and plans on making it's way back home to Germany. With David Farrar playing Cmd. Jeff Napier, who gives reluctant chase, Lyle Bettger as Chief Officer Kirchner, Waynes' foil, and sultry Lana Turner playing Ehrlichs' former heartthrob, the movie has a great deal of potential. However, as a fan of Wayne, it's difficulty to snarl at him for being a German. In addition, him being in the close quarters of Lana Turner on board ship, one can only feel disappointment as so little happens. Still, the movie is entertaining and since Wayne remains true to his screen image, one can enjoy all the action, slight as that might be. ****

THE ISLAND PRINCESS (Paolo Moffo and Pietro Francisci, 1954) **

I’d never heard of this peplum before it turned up recently on late-night Italian TV; however, with a bit of research, I realized that it was listed on the “Leonard Maltin Film Guide”. In any case, what particularly drew me to the film was the fact that it starred Marcello Mastroianni – soon to become one of Italy’s foremost leading men and international stars; he’s appropriately dashing in the garb of the Spanish armada but, then, his distinctive voice is dubbed by someone else (films from this country were famously shot M.O.S.)!

Anyway, it turned out to be a very ordinary spectacle – even without taking into consideration the extremely choppy (and muddy) quality of the print on display: in fact, while the film’s ‘official’ running-time is given as 105 minutes, the copy I watched ran for a measly 76! Incidentally, the action sequences (though little of these actually remain in the film as shown on TV!) are here credited to Pietro Francisci – best-known for helming the two Steve Reeves Hercules vehicles from later on in the decade which brought him stardom and cemented the popularity of the peplum genre; for the record, a solo genre effort by Francisci – ATTILA (1954), with Anthony Quinn in the title role – was released within days of this one!

The plot involves the Spanish conquistadores’, ahem, conquest of the Canary Islands; no sooner have they landed that one of the leaders of the expedition (Mastroianni, of course) meets and falls for a local girl (peplum regular Silvana Pampanini)…without realizing that she’s the current ruler’s daughter! While the old man is willing to negotiate peace terms with the Spaniards, a hotheaded young warrior wants none of it and conspires with the King’s chief adviser to oust their forces from the land. To begin with, they organize an ambush of the Armada who, naturally, retaliate by burning down one of their villages; then, the King is poisoned so that the girl assumes command – and take the rebellious warrior for a husband, since she needs a strong man by her side at such a precarious moment!

Needless to say, Pampanini has conflicting emotions about all of this: she loves Mastroianni but can’t bear the treatment of her people by the Spanish (despite being merely the direct result of their own provocation!); eventually, she gives in to the warrior’s demands…but, then, thinks back on it and leaves him reeling at the altar during the wedding ceremony! At the end, the two parties engage in open battle (again, it’s so extensively trimmed as to be confusing and deeply unsatisfying) – with the lovers finally re-united against an evocative backdrop of sea and sand, where the fleeing warrior had just then been cornered and dispatched.

Far Too Long-Winded a Mystery

Considering Miss Toye's over-vaunted reputation with the "in" crowd, it's a wonder this extremely middling "A" feature hasn't made it to DVD. Perhaps even the most desperate distributor would admit that 90 minutes is far too long to engage even the most amiable viewer in a mystery that most disappointingly turns on that over-used plot device: spies. Miss Toye's plodding, stolidly unimaginative direction doesn't help. Neither does Margaret Leighton's rather flat portrayal. Admittedly she is saddled with a thoroughly unconvincing part. Justin does what he can to fill the gap, playing with so much more animation than usual that he could be accused of over-acting. Roland Culver, alas, is saddled with a role that is both small and colorless. Raymond Huntley, it appears at the conclusion, was supposed to be a red herring, but his acting is so stiff that few, if any viewers, would even consider him as a suspect. Likewise Michael Medwin seems thoroughly unconvincing as the subject of a smash-hit biography. Fortunately, Duncan Lamont comes across as an absolute delight as the sarcastic police inspector. All told, however, the film is weighed way down with a surfeit of talk. Twenty minutes of deft editing would certainly improve an audience's lot, even if it meant postponing Miss Leighton's entrance and eliminating the final super-mild exit in the plane. Assistant art director: John Hoesli. Production manager: John Palmer. Assistant directors: Adrian Pryce-Jones, Peter Maxwell. Set continuity: Shirley Barnes. A pretty good Universal western

Once more, I am surprised that little western has not be commented yet.

I think it's a pretty good one, colorful, action packed, with famous actors such as Lex Barker, Howard Duff, John Mc Entire as good as ever and Leo Gordon, the bad guy, of course, the "heavy one".

Gunfights, fists fights, mine scenes, ...This little movie was a really good surprise to me.

Its the rarest Jesse Hibbs western available. Because there is not Audie Murphy in it?

Anyway, this feature doesn't deserve to be ignored. Not at all.

I saw it from a 16mm print, perhaps no TV broadcast has aired it yet...

In 1191, King Richard the Lionhearted, along with several other European monarchs, is in the Holy Land intent on retaking Jerusalem from the Saracens. There is much infighting and outright treachery in the European encampment encampment however. Two nobles in particular, Sir Giles Amaury and Conrad of Montferrat, want to eliminate the English king and attempt to have him assassinated. Severely wounded and on his death bed, Richard is brought back to health by a Saracen doctor recruited by one of his loyal knights, Sir Kenneth of the Leopard. The king recovers from his wounds but when he hears that Sir Lawrence wishes to marry Lady Edith Plantagenet, the knight is banished only to be taken in by the very doctor who treated the king and who has an altogether different identity.

King Richard And The Crusaders (David Butler, 1954) **1/2

Based on Sir Walter Scott's "The Talisman" (which I own in a comic-strip version!), this was made in the wake of IVANHOE (1952) – adapted from another classic by the same author; however, given that that film was made by journeyman Richard Thorpe (followed, with leading man Robert Taylor in tow, by two other popular MGM adventures – KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE [1953] and QUENTIN DURWARD [1955]), Warners somewhat incongruously assigned musical comedy expert Butler to this one!

While clearly inferior to those three films, KING RICHARD AND THE CRUSADERS isn't nearly as bad as its reputation would suggest (though it must be said that most spectacles from this era, disregarded by the majority of critics when new, stand up surprisingly well today as entertainment!). Even so, there's some definite campiness to the film – notably when Rex Harrison as Saladin lullabies George Sanders, playing the wounded King Richard (the score by reliable Max Steiner being noteworthy apart from this)…and, in any case, the whole emerges to be even more fanciful than Cecil B. De Mille's THE CRUSADES (1935; which preceded this viewing), what with the Muslim leader insinuating himself into the enemy camp, providing a cure for the King, and even aiding him in routing the traitors (genre staple Robert Douglas and Michael Pate) among his own ranks!!

One similarity to the earlier epic is the fact that Saladin falls for a Christian woman – though, in this case, it's Richard's cousin (Virginia Mayo) as opposed to his wife (who gets very limited screen time here) – but ultimately relinquishes the heroine to her lover (a fiery Scots knight played by a young, blonde yet surprisingly effective Laurence Harvey). Incidentally, Sanders – while older than Henry Wilcoxon's incarnation of Richard in THE CRUSADES – is no less gruff and headstrong and, in fact, spends more time fighting Harvey (including a jousting duel) than Harrison!!

Review :

A Rarity - a good film about the American Revolution!

I was glad to see that THE SCARLET COAT, after being absent from television for many years, has begun showing up on cable - usually on TURNER NETWORK. It is one of those films that I have referred to elsewhere that once was shown pretty frequently but then vanished from the small screen.

It is not as well recalled as other films about the Revolution - many of which are inferior. People recall 1776 for the solid musical underneath it.

They remember THE DEVIL'S DESCIPLE for Laurence Olivier's excellent (and fun) performance as General Burgoyne, and for the good work of his co-stars Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas. But they remember THE HOWARDS OF VIRGINIA, a dull film from the early 1940s that may be the most mediocre performance in Cary Grant's career. Except for 1776 the other two films have stars in them (1776 had some good character actors, William Daniel as John Adams - repeating his stage performance fortunately - and Howard De Silva as Ben Franklin - even in the small role of Edward Rutledge there is John Cullum singing that fascinating economic lecture "Mollasses to Rum to Slave".). So it goes with all of the other films - Griffith's America does have a diabolic performance of Lionel Barrymore as Walter Butler, the Tory. LAFAYETTE has Orson Welles portraying Ben Franklin (oddly enough nobody thought of making the musical BEN FRANKLIN IN Paris into a film - with Robert Preston in the lead as on Broadway). Robert Stack starred as JOHN PAUL JONES (a movie sunk by a wooden, lifeless script). Even Al Pacino could not save REVOLUTION. As for Mel Gibson's THE PATRIOT, it collapses in his desire to show sadistic British incidents which never happened (if a British Cavalry officer had burned down an Anglican Church with it's parishioners inside in the South in 1780, King George III - who took his being head of the Anglican Church seriously - would have had that officer hung!). A sad list - fortunately there is 1776 and DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK and THE SCARLET COAT.

The conspiracy of Benedict Arnold - Sir Henry Clinton - and Major John Andre is a subject that has only appeared in two movies - and oddly enough both were good. One is the comedy THE TIME OF THEIR LIVES, where Abbott and Costello link their colonial characters to the fate of Arnold's local co-conspirators. However, only the first twenty minutes of the film deal with the conspiracy at all (though the plot hinges on clearing Costello's name of treason charges).

THE SCARLET COAT is a solid dramatic treat, and wisely concentrates on the real tragic hero in the story: Major John Andre. Yes, he was a spy, and had he succeeded American history would have been part of the British Empire for at least another century (Arnold was selling more than control of West Point and the Hudson - Washington and his staff were scheduled to be there on the day the trap would have been sprung). But unlike Arnold (whatever blows he unfairly received after doing such marvelous service for the American cause up to 1777) Andre never betrayed his country - he was fighting for his king and homeland, and thought he was in the right. Michael Wilding makes this point very eloquently in the film's court-martial scene. As a result, the viewer's sympathies (as well as those of Cornell Wilde's character, and all the other characters in the film) remain with the Major even unto death. It is interesting to note that in the 19th Century the Arnold Conspiracy did remain the subject of American drama - but the play that held the boards was not named "Arnold" but "Andre". He couldn't be saved but we still regret what happened to him.

And then there is this 1955 film.

April fools

In the wake of the huge success of "Le Corniaud" and "La Grande Vadrouille" ," Poisson D'Avril" was theatrically re-released in the mid-sixties in France and it is sure easy to see why:it was the first time comic superstars Bourvil and Louis De Funès had played together, and they thought it was the right time to capitalize on the success of this golden pair.

Actually ,De Funès has only one scene (a five-minute appearance ) and it can, from that point of view ,be considered a shameless exploitation of the commercial phenomenon.

That said,Gilles Grangier is not lacking in practical experience ,and although his metier was essentially the thriller in the fifties ,he made an entertaining (and often very funny) comedy in the grand tradition of what the French call 'Théâtre De Boulevard ".The scene of the chic dinner in the luxury house ,where Bourvil and Pierre Duc tell their war "memories" is hilarious .Good support by Annie Cordy who often played with Bourvil ,not only in the movies, but also on stage .

It's really an amazing movie

Yes, compared to other Welles films, this one had been even more chopped up by his producers than "The Magnificent Ambersons" was. Yes, it's a hodge podge with quite a similar theme reminding the viewer of "Citizen Kane". It's also my favorite Orson Welles movie. Not the best, but my favorite.

There plenty of amazing acting and set pieces. Patricia Medina, Michael Redgrave, Akim Tamiroff, Mischa Auer, and especially Katina Paxinou all terrific. And beautiful Suzanne Flon, an obscure actress who also played a notable in John Huston's "Moulin Rogue" is seen here. There's plenty of typical, wonderful Welles directorial touches and set pieces.

Not to be missed.....Criteron really did a superb job piecing together the various version to create as close to Welles' own vision as was possible. Kudos to Peter Boganovich for his involvement.

Other than "Citizen Kane", most of Welles' films were botched up either by his own financial problems, Studio interference or just just plain weird bad luck. This new reconstruction puts "Mr. Arkadin", easily the most botched up of his films, on a level pegging and it's absolutely worth your time. (original review 2004, edited and updated 2008)

Double Indemnity part 2?

I didn't expect this movie to be this good knowing nothing about it. Kim Novak is not the bitch that Barbara Stanwyck is, but the most beautiful actress on the movie screen and shy way about her that was truly sensuous. No matter who the leading man in her movies was, you just felt the helplessness of them being totally enthralled with this soft, sensuous, unbelievable sex goddess, for lack of another original description.

This is only the second movie I seen Fred MacMurray in (no my three sons here) besides Double Indemnity and his performance is very good here also,... just as Double Indemnity... I found myself hoping he would get away with it!

Endearingly Clunky Relic

I have to admit having a soft spot for TOBOR THE GREAT, but not for the reasons one might expect. Oh sure, the robot is great, a towering behemoth of tin cans and toasters welded together into a clattering, somewhat clunky suit. He doesn't have much of a personality but he's cool. The scenes where Tobor goes postal and sets off to right wrongs are the best, especially when little Timmy is threatened by the bad Slavic accented spies who want to force his kindly scientist grandpa into spilling his state secrets for them.

And it's here where my interest in the film kicks in. It's a very subtle bit of indoctrination for young viewers into the wonders of America's cold war military industrial complex disguised as a giant rampaging robot movie. The heroes are all sharply uniformed military men or scientists working to further America's dominance in the space race, and the bad guys are all thugs who work for a foreign power with a vested interest in disrupting their progress. They probably don't even celebrate Christmas.

The film is rife with military lingo, helpful Air Force officers, well intentioned grandfatherly politicians who understand the need to keep secrets from the public, and little Timmy eagerly helping things along by his own deft contributions to ensuring for the common defense. It's a great little study about how national security really begins with each of us and our need for vigilance (sound familiar, War On Terror veterans?), hard work, and personal sacrifice. The biggest laugh comes in the opening monologue's passage regarding congress supposedly granting unlimited funding to the Tobor project -- those were the days!

The most interesting character in the film is actually the reporter, absurdly named Gilligan. He's a hard working leathershoe journalist who is determined to break his big story but is sympathetic to the government quashing his efforts when it comes to keeping the marvel of Tobor's development a secret from our enemies, and our friends. Everybody pitches in, including the shapely mom with her fresh, clean, good looks, representing that which we fight to protect back at home, which looks like Ward Cleaver's house. And just like the Beaver's mom I bet she'd be an animal in bed.

The big robot and his flashing lights & funky metallic shoes are just window dressing to keep the kids' interest -- and make no mistake, this film was aimed squarely at the bright 6 to 12 year old future defense industry workers in the audience. The lesson being that if you do well in school, mind your manners at home, and take an active role in the community you too might one day get to build friendly robotic soldiers who are immune to human weaknesses. It's a pretty fun little movie too and a harmless diversion for 9 year olds of all ages.
